Erik Smits (Woudrichem, 1973) is a Dutch photographer based in Amsterdam. Since graduating from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2006, he has specialized in portrait and documentary photography. His work is characterized by a keen eye for social dynamics and a fascination with human interaction across various contexts.
Smits has worked on assignments for a wide range of clients, including de Volkskrant, Het Parool, De Morgen, Vice, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, KNACK, MVRDV, and the Rijksmuseum. His photography is regularly featured in Volkskrant Magazine and other publications.
One of his most notable projects is Statafel 113011, in which he has been tracking a specific standing table since 2022. Rented out by Accuraat Verhuur, the table acts as a silent witness at a wide variety of events throughout the Netherlands — from neighborhood parties to political meetings. The project offers a unique perspective on Dutch society and appears regularly in the V section of de Volkskrant.
Smits recently completed How Was the Gig, a visual documentation of the jazz and improvisation scene in Amsterdam-Noord. The series was compiled into the book How Was the Gig and exhibited at the Bimhuis. Shot in an improvised studio setting at Café De Ruimte, the project highlights the diversity and creativity of musicians active in the local scene.
